Negril or Montego Bay?
choosing your coast.
Two coasts, two completely different lighting problems. Which one suits your day depends less on the scenery than on how forgiving your schedule needs to be.
IMG Weddings films and photographs weddings on both coasts, and the honest answer is that Negril and Montego Bay are not better or worse than each other. They fail and succeed in different ways, and the difference is almost entirely about which direction the land faces.
Negril faces west. Montego Bay mostly faces north.
That one sentence decides more about your photographs than any other choice you will make.
A west facing cliff in Negril puts the sun into open water behind your subjects. For about forty minutes before sunset it is the most dramatic light on the island. Then it ends, and it ends fast, because there is no land behind the horizon to hold any glow and nothing to bounce light back onto faces.
A north facing shoreline around Montego Bay never gets that head on sunset, and couples are sometimes disappointed to hear it. What it gives instead is a long, soft, gradual decline. The light is kinder for longer, group photographs are easier, and a ceremony that starts twenty minutes late is survivable rather than fatal.
What actually goes wrong on each coast
On the cliffs the usual problem is time. Couples underestimate how slowly a wedding party moves across uneven limestone in good shoes, and the window closes while people are still walking to it.
On the north coast the usual problem is the middle of the day. With no hard sunset deadline forcing the schedule, ceremonies drift earlier, and an afternoon ceremony under a vertical sun is the least flattering light either coast can offer.
So which one
Pick Negril if the picture in your head is the cliff edge, the horizon below you, and a sky doing something theatrical, and you accept that the day has to be built backwards from one unforgiving moment.
Pick Montego Bay if you have a large family, a lot of group photographs, guests who will not move quickly, or an evening reception that matters more than the ceremony portraits. The forgiveness is worth a great deal.
One thing that is not a tiebreaker: the quality of the photographs. Both coasts photograph beautifully when the timing respects what the light is doing. Neither rescues a schedule that ignores it.
